Emily's story

Emily’s baby sadly passed away at just 10 days old. Feeling lost and alone, she received counselling from a project funded by make Some Noise at Petals. This is Emily’s story:

"We fell pregnant in 2023. We'd sadly lost triplets a year prior, so went into this pregnancy a little anxious. But everything was going well, up until I got to about 27 weeks, then I started bleeding. After 2 weeks in hospital, they said to me, we've got to get the baby out, and baby George was born. He was 2 pounds, so very, very tiny.

He declined in his health and passed away at 10 days old. The grief was all completely consuming. I couldn't get out of bed, I didn't eat, didn't function. Obviously family wanted to rally around us and I wanted everybody to go away.

The impact of having to go home just me and Rob when we were expecting to go home with a baby, it was horrendous. You just feel like nobody gets it, nobody understands how that feels. You're stuck and you're lost.

Very quickly, Liz [a counsellor at Petals] made me feel so comfortable talking to her, and like I was completely justified with how I was feeling. I'd look forward to my sessions with her because I know I'd be able to just go and there'd be no judgement whatsoever.

Some of the stuff we witnessed with George was awful. There was stuff that I didn't want to repeat to my family because I didn't want them having that in their mind. Whereas with Liz, I could be open and I knew that it was something she was able to handle as a professional counsellor. Being able to get that off my chest and speak openly helped me so much. It was a little safe place."
