2017/18: Spina Bifida Scotland

2017/18: Spina Bifida Scotland

Spina Bifida Scotland provides a lifetime commitment of support to people in the area affected by this complex birth defect, their carers and families.

Spina Bifida is a developmental disorder that arises in pregnancy. The majority of babies affected are born paralysed from the waist down and affected by bowel and bladder dysfunction. They will be lifelong wheelchair users and require lifelong support.

The charity provides specialist support and information including pregnancy support, medical self-management, benefits and financial assistance, support for carers, independent living, specialist equipment, emotional development, housing and adaptions advice, education and bereavement support.

Spina Bifida Scotland introduces new parents to other families in the same situation to help them build them a support network, and provides respite at a specially adapted cottage in Fife.

When 8 year old Milli Hamilton was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, her mother, Caroline, was referred to Spina Bifida Scotland. She said:

“We’re just thankful this charity is there. If we need anything – we just pick up the phone and call. As Milli gets older we know we’ll face further challenges but Kerry has already attended meetings with us at Milli’s school and with mobility aid companies to ensure a positive and happy life for Milli. We just don’t know what we’d do without them.”

Global’s Make Some Noise is proud to support Be All You Can Be – an extension and development of support services on the west coast of Scotland where need is greatest.

It is hoped that this increased support will equip young people affected by Spina Bifida and their family with the skills to overcome the range of disadvantages their child will face, and empower them to realise their full potential.
